Work is progressing quickly on the floodplain near Shoreham as part of our Interreg 2 Seas SCAPE and #HeritageFund project.
Working with Preston Farm and Kent Wildlife Trust, the historic ditches have been reinstated with some subtle changes to improve opportunities for nature. Later work will include the installation of 'leaky dams' to encourage the River Darent to flood the watermeadow during high flow conditions after rainfall. This will reduce flood risk downstream whilst also enhancing landscape character and improving the riverside habitat. A truly landscape-led approach to water management!
It may look a little messy and raw at the moment, but this will soon soften in the spring as vegetation re-establishes. And theres always the chance of the return of breeding snipe and lapwing…
This project has been made possible with funding from Interreg 2 Seas
and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
